The big loser with Xabi Alonso: they announce the player who could say goodbye
With the signing of Álvaro Carreras, a footballer could leave Real Madrid in the summer
Ferland Mendy leaves behind the privilege granted to him by Carlo Ancelotti, who on several occasions described him as "the best defensive left-back in the world". In fact, it was at the Italian coach's request that the player renewed his contract last season until 2028. However, that position is changing with the arrival of Xabi Alonso.
The coach from Gipuzkoa has a clear style: three center-backs and two wide wing-backs. He looks for versatile full-backs who can defend, create, and attack. Mendy doesn't fit that profile. In defense, he is a very difficult full-back to beat and is committed to his role, performing it outstandingly as long as he doesn't suffer injuries.

Nevertheless, he doesn't fit the creative profile, much less the offensive one. Technically, he is a decent player, but he lacks the vision and offensive skills that Xabi Alonso demands from his wing-backs. He could be an option, but not a priority.
In this regard, Fran García adapts better to the required profile. Álvaro Carreras as well, who could take over the left flank in his first season at Real Madrid.
Álvaro Carreras, the opposite of Mendy on the left wing
Álvaro Carreras is defensively less solid than the Frenchman, but his offensive projection does match what the new coach is looking for. Although he also doesn't fully meet the creative requirements needed to join the midfield, he comes closer to the qualities offered by his teammate.

For all these reasons, the club is searching for a left wing-back who fits the tactical needs required by Alonso. Real Madrid are negotiating with SL Benfica for the signing of Álvaro Carreras, intending to bring him in as soon as possible so he can participate in the Club World Cup.
His arrival casts doubt on the continuity of Mendy or Fran García, since one of the two would be left out. Both have valid contracts, but for now, the Frenchman seems to be the weakest link among the three footballers. Nevertheless, Xabi Alonso will have the final say no matter what.
