Ferland Mendy has spoken with Xabi Alonso, decision made and there could be a surprise

The coach has made it clear to the Frenchman that he doesn't see him as a wing-back with an attacking mindset, but he does see him as a left center-back

Ferland Mendy has made a decision and, although he seemed to be out of Real Madrid, he has chosen to stay. He wants to fulfill his contract and fight for a spot in Xabi Alonso's team.

According to Defensa Central, the Basque coach has already spoken with him. The conversation was clear and direct. He doesn't guarantee him a leading role, but he does leave the door open.

Role change: from full-back to center-back

Xabi doesn't see him as his ideal full-back. In his system, he looks for a different profile with more depth, more dribbling, and more clarity in passing. That's where Álvaro Carreras and Fran García come in.

Carreras will sign in the next few hours and is coming to play an important role. Meanwhile, Fran has shined at the Club World Cup and has convinced the coaching staff. Mendy knows he doesn't have a place in that battle, but even so, he doesn't want to leave.

The surprise lies in the alternative Xabi is considering: using Mendy as a left center-back in a back three. It wouldn't be his usual position, but it would be an interesting option. Especially in physically demanding matches.

Mendy doesn't give up

The Frenchman has a contract until 2026 and, despite his secondary role, he isn't considering leaving. Not even if an offer comes in, because his intention is to stay at the club, earn minutes, and show that he can keep contributing.

Last season he played only 31 matches. Injuries have been his biggest setback. He didn't even reach 15 league games, a situation that has cost him a lot both athletically and emotionally.

Even so, he doesn't give up. Mendy wants to show that he still has a place, that he can reinvent himself, and that he hasn't said his last word at Bernabéu.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso values his physicality and defensive ability. Although he doesn't see him as a starter, he believes he can help. Especially as a center-back at key moments.

Ferland Mendy faces a new challenge, something different, more difficult, but with the same determination. At Madrid, where competition never lets up.
