Gonzalo Miró still hasn't gotten over Julián's penalty, harsh criticism after the Euro Cup: 'Robbery...'

The panelist recalled the disallowed penalty for Julián Álvarez, ignoring the modification of the IFAB rule

The Women's Euro final between Spain and England reopened an old wound. All because of a penalty that strongly reminded many of the one Julián Álvarez took against Atlético de Madrid.

When Beth Mead took her shot from the penalty spot and slipped, touching the ball with both feet, many fans thought of that penalty that ended up being key in Atleti's elimination against Real Madrid.

Miró explodes on ‘El Tertulión’

During his appearance on ‘El Tertulión’ on Tiempo de Juego, Gonzalo Miró didn't hold back: “Today, the robbery Atlético suffered in Champions has been proven.”

The journalist, a well-known Atlético supporter, was blunt. He criticized the difference in refereeing criteria between both plays and pointed out that what happened in the Euro was exactly the same, but with a different outcome.

In Mead's penalty, the referee decided to repeat the kick. In Julián Álvarez's case, UEFA annulled it for double contact, relying on an image that caused a lot of controversy.

Lawsuit against UEFA

All this is happening during a tense week for Atlético's environment. The International Union of Atlético Supporters' Clubs and the Señales de Humo Association have filed a criminal lawsuit against UEFA and its president, Aleksander Ceferin.

The reason: an alleged crime of document falsification related to the video published by the organization to justify the VAR decision that annulled the Argentine forward's penalty.

According to the supporters' clubs, the recording was manipulated and doesn't clearly show the real action. The complaint is ongoing.

"The same penalty, different criteria"

Miró was clear in pointing out the parallel: “It was a double touch like Julián's, right? But today, curiously, it was repeated.”

The difference in treatment between one play and the other, according to him, exposes the refereeing establishment.

“We all remembered again. How could we not,” he concluded, visibly upset but without being dramatic.

For many Atlético fans, the Euro only confirmed something they've been denouncing for months: that the elimination against Real Madrid had more shadows than lights. Gonzalo Miró, of course, hasn't moved on.
