Grimaldo: from wanting to sign with Real Madrid to receiving a €40M offer from Barça

The multimillion-dollar offer with which Barcelona seeks to steal Alejandro Grimaldo's signing from Real Madrid

One of Real Madrid's positions that raised the most doubts during the season was left back. Despite the excellent performance Ferland Mendy had shown, the Frenchman once again suffered from multiple injuries. Meanwhile, although Fran García was able to play several minutes, he failed to convince with a rather inconsistent performance.

This led Real Madrid to show interest in signing a reinforcement for this position in this summer transfer window. Although Real Madrid had several options, the most striking was Alejandro Grimaldo. Having excelled at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso's management, the coach welcomed his arrival at Real Madrid.

However, with an offer of 40 million euros, Barcelona has tried to interfere with this deal. With Atlético de Madrid also showing interest in acquiring Grimaldo's services, Real Madrid faces a particular problem.

Barcelona's interest

At 29 years old, Alejandro Grimaldo is one of the most solid and experienced full-backs in Europe. Shining both at club and national team level, Grimaldo is considered a top-level reinforcement by Real Madrid. After a season in which he played 64 hrs. 29 min. (3,869 min.), Grimaldo is ready for a change of scenery.

Although Real Madrid remains interested in signing him, Barcelona's presence has been a real surprise. With Grimaldo having come up through Barcelona's youth academy, the blaugrana club trusts it can convince the player to return to the team where he was born.

Their offer of 40 million euros perfectly meets what Leverkusen demands in order to let the full-back go. However, given the severe financial crisis affecting Barcelona, Real Madrid is confident they can still secure this important transfer.

Real Madrid's opportunity

Although Atlético is also interested, the reality is that no player with aspirations to win would sign for the Rojiblanco club. With an opportunity still to complete Grimaldo's signing, Real Madrid won't give up on this deal.
