Last-minute offer for Carreras complicates his signing with Real Madrid
Updates with Carreras, his signing for Real Madrid is still hanging in the air
This past Monday was the deadline to register players for this summer's Club World Cup. Despite Real Madrid's attempts, Álvaro Carreras's signing ultimately didn't happen. Everything pointed to after the event in the United States, paying his €50 million clause.
However, everything could take an unexpected turn due to the appearance of a third team in the equation. This is Manchester United, which could play a significant role in Carreras's signing. First, because they have a buy-back clause for €18 million that they can activate in 2025.

The Red Devils might be considering activating it to get something out of the deal that's being worked on. However, for that to happen, they'd need Álvaro Carreras's approval. He seems to be clear that the possibility of returning to Real Madrid is much more attractive.
It doesn't seem like they're going to convince him since Carreras's priority is to sign for Real Madrid. But Los Blancos will need to stay alert to everything that happens and could mean a setback. They've already seen how Benfica prevented his arrival before the Club World Cup.
Real Madrid could use Manchester United
It's true that Manchester United is paying close attention to the deal, but that's because they're interested in seeing it finalized. Another clause they signed with Benfica is that they'd have to pay them 20 percent of a future transfer. So they'll get less than the €50 million Real Madrid would pay.

Los Blancos could use that when pressuring the Portuguese in negotiations. Among other things, because there was speculation about Manchester's buy-back of Álvaro Carreras. Madrid would make an offer to United for a lower price.
It seems like a convoluted situation and everything will be solved after the World Cup with the payment of his clause. But Real Madrid knows they can't relax in the face of a deal that's become complicated. They hope there won't be any more developments and that they'll secure his signing in July.
