In a hypothetical quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund, an old acquaintance, Maldini also picked Real Madrid as the favorite.
The surprise came in the hypothetical semifinals that Real Madrid could play against Paris Saint-Germain. Maldini, besides giving the win to PSG, also showed his trust that the Parisians will be crowned champions of this tournament.
An unexpected choice
For years, Maldini has kept himself as one of the best-known soccer experts in all of Spain. Having lived this sport since before the start of the new century, Maldini has extensive experience in the field. However, all this knowledge is sometimes called into question after decisions like the ones he made to predict the World Cup.
Real Madrid, despite its draw against Al Hilal, achieved two victories in a group it completely dominated. Its last match against Salzburg was a complete display of good soccer, achieving a 3-0 scoreline that actually fell a bit short.
Meanwhile, PSG, which is the current Champions League champion, had certain problems during the group stage. Its defeat against Botafogo was clear proof that, contrary to what people like Maldini might think, PSG isn't invincible.
