Neither Mac Allister nor Enzo Fernández: Madrid has another Premier League star within reach

Adam Wharton, a 21-year-old English midfielder who plays for Crystal Palace, is the main desired option for the midfield

Real Madrid keeps looking for reinforcements for its midfield. Xabi Alonso is clear that covering Luka Modric's departure is a priority. Among the most talked-about names is Adam Wharton.

The English midfielder, who is 21 years old, plays for Crystal Palace and has become one of the Premier League's top prospects. His tactical maturity and ability to influence the game have put him on the radar of several European giants. In addition to Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United are also closely following him.

Wharton arrived at Crystal Palace in January 2024 from Blackburn Rovers for about €20 million (about $21.8 million). Since then, he has earned a starting spot and has established himself as a key piece of the team.

He stands out for his vision, passing accuracy, and physical ability. These qualities make him an ideal candidate to take on responsibilities in the white midfield, even to become Kroos's heir.

An expensive but possible signing

Crystal Palace knows the treasure it has in its hands and has valued Wharton at about €100 million (about $109 million). This is an amount that Real Madrid wouldn't consider spending unless Rodrygo leaves this summer. The sale of the Brazilian would allow the club to allocate those resources to strengthen the midfield.

Xabi Alonso highly values the Englishman's positional intelligence and versatility. He can play as a defensive pivot or join the attack.

He isn't particularly a goal scorer, but he is a playmaker, with vision for passing and the ability to handle rival pressure. It is even said that Jude Bellingham may have recommended his signing, convinced that he would fit the style the Basque coach is looking for.

Obstacles and opportunities

The signing won't be easy. Crystal Palace is experiencing a historic moment after winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield and qualifying for the Europa League. The London club doesn't need to sell, and Wharton's market value, according to Transfermarkt, is €45 million (about $49 million), although it could rise due to his age and potential.

In Real Madrid, the registration of Franco Mastantuono with Castilla could leave a free spot in the first team. That vacancy would allow a new player to be registered if the opportunity arises. For now, Wharton remains a target to watch closely, with everything ready for his name to become a protagonist in the white market.
