From Potential Real Madrid Transfer to Despised and Rejected by His Own Fans
The soccer player isn't going through a good competitive moment at his current club
One of Real Madrid's board of directors' most striking priorities for the 2025 summer market is in defense. In addition to the additions of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alphonso Davies, it's also necessary to expand the roster of central defenders available to Carlo Ancelotti.
Aware that he won't have reinforcements during the winter market, the Reggiolo coach will have to rely on Antonio Rüdiger, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Raúl Asencio for that area of the field. Meanwhile, he'll look toward the summer period with the desire to get one of the transfers he's been demanding for so long and with such vehemence for Bernabéu changing room.
However, the executives led by Florentino Pérez don't have an easy task satisfying the Italian strategist's demands. While it's true that the first team urgently needs a central defender arrival, there are still no agreements regarding the most suitable player for this. Especially due to the financial issue, a complicated obstacle for the club's leadership to overcome.
Because the club's president is only willing to pay up to 50 million euros to strengthen the defense's core. That amount of money prevents many names from being placed on the club's list of potential transfers, such as Castello Lukeba or Lisandro Martínez.
Not the ideal profile
The Argentine center-back from Manchester United had been considered, in recent days, as one of the best alternatives that Madrid had to expand its team. Nothing could be further from the truth judging by what's happening around the '6' of the red devils in the last two matches played by the English club.
Not even Rúben Amorim's arrival to the Old Trafford locker room, replacing Erik ten Hag, would have been enough to correct the free fall the club has experienced since 2018. Comments against Lisandro Martínez have multiplied since the match held on Boxing Day, a typical Christmas day in the Premier League.
"Speechless with Martínez and company", "Martínez is a burden... terrible form", "he's been nothing but embarrassing since he returned from his injury" or "he needs to be replaced and fast" are some of the comments recorded on social media. This negative trend he's included in, considering Manchester United's poor moment, makes Real Madrid wary of transfer him this summer.
Without an alternative that seemed certain, the executives led by Florentino appear to have returned to square one in search of a center-back who offers quality and longevity in equal parts. The most popular name right now is Castello Lukeba, who could cost more than 90 million euros.
