Raúl Asencio Caught: Movistar Cameras Capture What He Did at Mendizorroza

The center-back started singing the chants from the stands that wished him dead, showing great mental strength

Raúl Asencio is once again at the center of controversy. The Real Madrid defender was caught by Movistar+ cameras during the match at Mendizorroza, starring in a reaction that left no one indifferent.

It all started before the match. Offensive posters against the player appeared around Deportivo Alavés's stadium. Messages like "Real Madrid, protectors of aggressors" or "Get out of here" decorated the surroundings.

Once the match began, the local fans launched extremely harsh chants against Asencio. From the stands, the regrettable "Asencio, die" was heard again, as it had happened weeks earlier at the Reale Arena.

Despite the gravity of the moment, Raúl Asencio replied with coldness, joining the chant as if it didn't concern him. When the referee stopped the match and announced over the loudspeaker the rejection of any violent or discriminatory act, the cameras focused on the defender.

His reaction was clear:  "It's okay, go ahead," Asencio said, asking the referee to resume the game. Right after, Madrid had equalized in number of players after Manu Sánchez's expulsion, and the defender preferred to continue rather than insist on stopping the match.

The Protocol Was Activated in the 78th Minute

Referee Soto Grado did not act immediately. It was necessary to wait until the 78th minute for the referee to initiate the protocol against verbal violence. The game was stopped for a few minutes. The usual message was broadcast over the loudspeaker and scoreboard: "Deportivo Alavés rejects and condemns any form of violence, racism, or xenophobia in sports. Cheer with passion and respect."

In the match report, Soto Grado detailed the insults. Among them were phrases like "Asencio die" and "Asencio scum, get out of Vitoria". He also noted that the insults came from a specific section of the stadium, clearly identifiable by Alavés jerseys and scarves.

Mendizorroza is not a pleasant place for Asencio. On December 21, he was excluded from a last-minute draft to travel to Vitoria. While his teammates boarded the bus, he stayed behind due to having to testify in Madrid for a pending legal case.

The storm over Asencio remains active. This time, his reaction in front of the cameras has given even more to talk about.
