Raúl Asencio Embarrasses Transfermarkt: His New Market Value Is a Scandal

The growth of the Spanish footballer has affected other aspects of his time in the European elite

One of the key names this season for Real Madrid is Raúl Asencio. The young Canarian center-back has joined the first team and, without needing an adaptation period, has become the second center-back available to Carlo Ancelotti for this season. His growth on the field has consequences off it.

Undoubtedly, the most striking is his draft to the Spanish national team. Luis de la Fuente, in the list of eligibles for the March international break, decided to call the '35' merengue... although he later decided to place him as one of the discards for the Netherlands-Spain match held at De Kuip last Friday.

Given his sporting achievements, although he hasn't yet debuted with the Spanish national team, Raúl Asencio's market value has changed considerably these weeks. The website Transfermarkt, a reference in this regard, has updated the Canarian defender's value to 30M euros.

This significant increase in the money it would theoretically cost to acquire his services comes after registering a market value of just 7.5M euros. This increase occurred when Carlo Ancelotti decided to call him to address the shortage of center-backs that the first team was experiencing at that time... a goal he has more than fulfilled.

Striking Differences

As is often the case in these situations, many consider that the increase recorded by Raúl Asencio is less than he deserves. While it is true that his accumulation of sporting merits should earn him an increase in his market value, some Madridists believe that Transfermarkt could have increased his 'real' value.

Especially considering other well-known cases of young Spanish center-backs like Pau Cubarsí. The '2' of FC Barcelona is valued at 70M euros despite having only played one full season as a first-team player for the blaugrana. His market value, upon reaching the first team from La Masia, was already set at a striking 25M euros.

According to Transfermarkt, Cubarsí is the fourth most valuable center-back at the moment, ahead of other big names like Rúben Días, Castello Lukeba, or Kim Min-jae. That's why many understand that an increase to 30M euros for Raúl Asencio, given his excellent performance in just months at the elite level, is very limited.

The comparisons between Real Madrid's '35' and FC Barcelona's '2' seem natural not only because of the existing rivalry between the clubs of both footballers. Both would now be competing for a place in the Spanish national team with other big names like Dean Huijsen, Íñigo Martínez, or Daniel Vivian.
