Romero talks about the play
After the match, the Espanyol wingback spoke with DAZN and gave his version of the action.
—How did you see your tackle on Mbappé?
—I knew it was impossible to stop him in full stride, I tried to stop him as best I could. It was a bit of an ugly tackle, I apologized. It's something that didn't go any further, it stayed there.
The Espanyol player wanted to downplay the action and emphasized that he had no intention of causing harm.
Indignation in Real Madrid
The play didn't go unnoticed in the white locker room. Ancelotti was blunt in a press conference: "Everyone saw it. It was a clear red card tackle."
Referee Muñiz Ruiz decided to sanction the action with yellow, a criterion that caused debate among experts. Iturralde González was emphatic on SER: "It's red, very red. In another league, they wouldn't hesitate to send him off."
Meanwhile, Espanyol defended the referee's decision. Their coach stated: "It's football, sometimes there's contact. We shouldn't exaggerate."
Despite the controversy, Romero will be able to play the next match without sanction. Real Madrid, however, remains upset with the refereeing. "We don't ask for favors, just justice," declared a white executive.
The debate remains open. Should Carlos Romero have been sent off? Spanish football is once again in the eye of the storm.
