De la Fuente surprises, calls up Gonzalo García unexpectedly for the senior team

Luis de la Fuente surprises Gonzalo García and calls him up to train with the senior national team after his success in the Club World Cup

Gonzalo García experienced an unexpected Monday. Luis de la Fuente called him to complete the list of players for the training session of the senior national team. This surprise puts the young striker on La Roja's radar.

Until now, Gonzalo is drafted with the U-21. The call to the senior team comes after his breakthrough at Real Madrid and his outstanding performance at the Club World Cup. There, he scored four goals and became the tournament's top scorer, proving that he has what it takes to play at the highest level.

The Madrid-born player has accelerated his career in recent months. His minutes with Madrid's first team have given him experience and confidence. Luis de la Fuente wanted to see him up close before considering him for important future drafts.

First steps with the senior team

This Monday, Gonzalo trained alongside Fran, Mendoza, and Fer López. The players who played in the league match on Sunday worked separately, so the session allowed De la Fuente to assess the young talents calmly.

Gonzalo made the most of the opportunity.  In the training match, he scored two goals and left a good impression. His physical work, movement, and finishing caught the coach's attention.

Although his immediate focus is the U-21, this contact with the senior team is a boost. Gonzalo will play the qualifying matches for the 2027 European Championship against Cyprus and Kosovo with David Gordo in charge. There, he will have to keep showing his ability and versatility.

The forward line of the senior team is a competitive area. Morata is going through inconsistent moments, Samu is looking to adapt to the play style, and Oyarzabal and Ayoze are regulars if injuries allow. Gonzalo will have to take it step by step and make the most of every opportunity.

A path of constant work

David Gordo highlighted that Gonzalo can play in several positions and that his development depends on daily effort. "The only path is work," he explained.

Luis de la Fuente also conveyed confidence to him. "Gonzalo is on the right path. Achievements are built with effort and consistency. He will have his moment because he works very well," he stated.

The call to the senior team is a warning for everyone: Gonzalo García is starting to stand out among the best in Spanish soccer. With work and consistency, he could be a key piece for La Roja in the coming years.
