Xabi's system for this season revealed: He bets on change

The Basque coach has made his decision during the first training sessions

One of the biggest questions for Real Madrid this season is which system Xabi Alonso will use. The Tolosa native has shown that he likes the 4-3-3, however, it's not always the most suitable. In fact, at Bayer Leverkusen, he managed to get a lot of value out of playing with three center-backs, filling the midfield.

There was uncertainty about which of the two systems Xabi Alonso would use at Real Madrid next season. In the Club World Cup, we saw him using both, and the results could provide a clue. With the preseason training sessions he's had, he has made a decision.

He will opt for a three-man defense, with two wing-backs like Trent and Carreras who will help the midfield. Both have good touch, they help with ball distribution, and he wants to take advantage of those strengths. That's the information we've received from Valdebebas to Defensa Central.

The idea is to break with the three-up-front scheme that Ancelotti used last season. Xabi Alonso prefers control, with players who have better ball skills and can channel the play. In addition, Trent and Carreras cover a lot of ground, so they'll also provide width to the field.

The playing system Xabi Alonso will choose will leave two strikers, who will be Vinícius and Mbappé. It's true that the season is long and he will be able to introduce rotations. That will leave one spot open, which could complement the midfield or join the attack.

Rodrygo, Brahim, Arda, Endrick, and Gonzalo García will fight for that last spot in the starting eleven. Even more so during the first few months when Bellingham will be out and unavailable. When he returns, everything could get a bit more complicated for anyone trying to earn a place.

Everything will depend on whether Tchouaméni plays as the third center-back or if he is put in the pivot role. In the first option, a spot will open up to accompany Fede Valverde and Jude in the starting line-up. There are many possibilities that we'll solve throughout the season.
