Xabi Alonso lashes out at CTA and its lack of consistency: 'When they use VAR...'

Real Madrid's coach didn't hold anything back during the press conference

Real Madrid has achieved a perfect record of victories before the first international break of the season. The September national team commitments set the boundaries for the work of many clubs, including the sports discipline led by Xabi Alonso. The Tolosa coach assessed several aspects of the match in the post-match press conference at Santiago Bernabéu.

One of the main points of attention in the Real Madrid-Real Mallorca match is the refereeing controversy. The three disallowed goals for the home team, which caused the anger of the Madridist supporters gathered in the Madridist coliseum, also prompted some striking remarks from the first team's coach.

When asked about what happened with the video refereeing in Deportivo Alavés-Atlético de Madrid, the Basque coach admitted that "I was also surprised". After all, the goal awarded to Atlético de Madrid should not have counted due to offside: that mistake by González Fuertes affected the match at Santiago Bernabéu. The CTA decided to remove him, at the last minute, from his position as AVAR referee for Real Madrid-Real Mallorca.

Melero López was the one who served as Pulido Santana's assistant in the video refereeing for this match of the Madridist team. Xabi Alonso made it clear that "these were mistakes that shouldn't happen and let's see what happens" in a matter that remains very thorny. After all, Real Madrid also had its share of refereeing controversy in the match.

Sincerity and elegance

Xabi Alonso made it clear that some changes would be needed to regulate and properly manage video refereeing in Spanish soccer. "In the overuse and in the correct use of VAR, I think you also shouldn't re-referee absolutely every situation, but when it's used it has to be used correctly, of course".

These remarks from Real Madrid's coach are not exclusively related to what happened in the match at Mendizorroza; they could also refer to the three plays that took place at Santiago Bernabéu. In any case, this is not the first time Xabi Alonso has shown his courage when defending the model of soccer he considers fair at the European elite level.

Both on and off the field. His tactical principles, after two months, are successfully taking hold among the first team's players, as the results achieved before the September international break show. The white club has, for now, returned to winning ways, as was demanded of the coaching staff when they had just arrived in the Spanish capital.

The international break will be a moment for reflection on everything achieved so far... including situations like the one analyzed by Xabi Alonso, regarding the VAR, in the post-match press conference after Real Madrid-Real Mallorca. The video refereeing controversy remains a constant for yet another season, regardless of the change at the top of the CTA.
