Xabi Alonso wanted him for Madrid, Wirtz reveals what he replied: 'He is...'

Both spoke before his signing, and the German confirms what he told him

Real Madrid was one of the teams that showed the most interest in signing Florian Wirtz. Florentino was delighted with the German, and he saw him as the next superstar to join the white squad. However, Liverpool is the club that has ended up securing his services.

Despite Wirtz's good relationship with Xabi Alonso, the Reds have won this time. Although the man from Tolosa tried to convince him, now the German player has admitted it. In some recent statements, he has pointed out what he thinks about his move to Liverpool.

When Wirtz was asked about Xabi Alonso, his answer made it very clear. "He was very happy that I joined Liverpool" the German player said about it. So there was indeed a conversation between the two before he gave the yes to the Reds.

In any case, Wirtz hasn't revealed anything else that could make us suspect what they talked about. We don't know if Xabi made a last attempt to convince him to wait for Real Madrid. Or if he simply asked him for advice since the man from Tolosa also played for Liverpool.

Real Madrid planned to sign Wirtz in 2026, but they've had to change strategy

It's true that Wirtz's name has been mentioned insistently in the halls of Valdebebas. The Merengues knew he was a player with enormous potential and were studying his signing. In addition, Florentino was delighted with the performance he was having at Bayer.

However, the idea wasn't to sign him this summer, since they were focused on other positions. In the mind of Real Madrid's president, Wirtz would renew with Bayer. That way, he would be a signing they'd make in 2026 after the national teams' World Cup (Mundial de selecciones).

With his arrival at Liverpool, they've changed their plans, although they're not going to lose sight of him. If he keeps progressing as he has, they don't rule out going after him in the future. However, it will be very expensive by then since he'll be a global star.
