54M, Madrid reaches an agreement and the selling club 'backs down' pending signature
The Whites had reached an agreement with Benfica for Álvaro Carreras, and the Portuguese broke their word
Real Madrid had everything settled with Benfica to sign Álvaro Carreras. The deal was ready: €54 million and the player would immediately join the white team to play in the Club World Cup. But everything changed at the last minute.
According to Carlos Carpio, deputy director of Marca newspaper,Benfica gave its word. The deal included payment in two installments and the immediate release of the player. Everything seemed done.
EL BENFICA LLEGÓ A ACEPTAR 54 MILLONES DEL REAL MADRID POR ALVARO CARRERAS
Benfica backed out
Unexpectedly, the Portuguese club changed its stance, and despite having given its word, they decided to register Carreras in the tournament. They broke what had been agreed with Real Madrid, which hadn't signed the agreement yet, trusting Benfica's word.
The reaction in Valdebebas has been outrage. The white team doesn't understand the move. They feel betrayed and, according to Poli Rincón, they're very upset by the attitude of the Portuguese directors.
Immediate response from Real Madrid
In response to this turn, Real Madrid has made a firm decision: it will pay Carreras's release clause of €50 million (50 million euros) as soon as the Club World Cup ends.
There will be no more negotiations and they won't sit down with Benfica again or review conditions. They'll execute the clause and the player will become part of the team directly.
This legal route doesn't allow Benfica to block the move. Once the amount is deposited, Carreras will be free to sign with the white team.

A priority signing for Xabi Alonso
Carreras is one of the priorities to strengthen Real Madrid's left back. His profile fits what Xabi Alonso is looking for: speed, defensive solidity, and offensive capability.
The player, a youth product of the club itself, wants to return. He has already said "yes" to the project and only the signature on the deal was missing because the agreement was closed.
The white team isn't going to allow another episode of disloyalty. After what happened with Carreras and Rui Costa (Benfica's president) on the eve of the Club World Cup, this time they won't take any chances. A word isn't enough.
In ten days, if everything goes as planned, Carreras will officially be a Real Madrid player. This time, with no room for surprises.
