Goodbye to the World Cup: Benfica puts Álvaro Carreras in an unprecedented situation

The situation becomes more complicated for Carreras after the decision by the Portuguese team

Real Madrid is focused on the signings they can make ahead of the Club World Cup this summer. Huijsen and Alexander Arnold were the first two reinforcements they officially announced. In the coming week, they hope to keep doing the same with several more players.

But things are getting more complicated than expected for the Madridists with Álvaro Carreras. Benfica has gotten serious and could cause a problem for the young full-back. For now, they've forced him to travel to the United States with the rest of the Portuguese team.

For now, the agreement with Real Madrid hasn't been reached, which has caused some unease. Especially considering that the transfer window opened by FIFA closes on the 10th. If they haven't signed him by then, Carreras could miss out on the World Cup.

This will happen if Benfica includes him in their squad list and officially registers him for the World Cup. If that happens and he later ends up signing for Real Madrid, it'll be a mess. He won't be able to play in the tournament this summer with the Madridists, but he also won't be able to do so with the Portuguese team.

Xabi Alonso would face the World Cup with many doubts

Xabi Alonso has insisted on signing Álvaro Carreras to have him already for the Club World Cup. With Mendy injured, he knows he'll only have Fran García available for the left-back position. He wanted to have a couple of options to face this title with guarantees.

It seemed there wouldn't be any problems, since the former Madridist youth player wants to return to Real Madrid. He has already communicated this to Benfica, making his intentions clear to the Portuguese team. But that hasn't managed to unblock the negotiations so far.

There are still a couple of days left for the Whites to get the deal closed. That way, Carreras will be at the World Cup and will do so under Xabi Alonso's orders. That's everyone's desire, but for now, it hasn't been confirmed.
