Kees Smit responds to interest from Real Madrid and Barça, announces where he will play in the 2025-26 season
The Dutch footballer wants to continue developing at AZ Alkmaar before making the leap to a top-level European club
Kees Smit is sure about it. The young Dutch midfielder, one of the greatest prospects in European soccer, will stay at AZ Alkmaar next season. He confirmed it himself in an interview with HN Nieuws.
At just 19 years old, Smit has attracted interest from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. However, the player believes that it's not yet time to make the leap.
"First, I want to show here that I can do well and be important," the footballer stated. The goal is clear: to earn a spot at AZ before thinking about moving to another country.

Madrid is closely following him
Real Madrid has him on its list. The white club is looking for young midfielders to prepare for the succession of Modric and Kroos. Smit's name is highly regarded in Valdebebas.
Recently, he was chosen as the best player of the Under-19 European Championship, which has only increased his value. But Smit himself asks for patience.

"The interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid is positive, but if I go there, I don't know how many times I'm going to play," he explained honestly. He knows that at a big club, minutes aren't guaranteed.
There is no agreement with anyone
Smit was clear: he doesn't have anything finalized with any club: "There is nothing concrete. There's only interest," he insisted. He is flattered to be on the radar of the two Spanish giants, but he prefers to take it step by step.
"I liked seeing it and reading about it. These are very good things, no doubt. Maybe the two biggest clubs in the world. But right now, that's all there is," he admitted.
He knows that he needs continuity. Goals, assists, and leadership: "I haven't yet shown everything I can do at AZ," he acknowledged.
This year, he wants to make more of a difference. To be a starter, shine, and show all his potential: "I could've scored a few more goals. This year will be different, but I have to play," he concluded.
For now, Smit is staying home. In Alkmaar. He is keeping Real Madrid and Barça waiting. Whoever wants him will have to call again later. For now, he chooses to grow by playing.
