Official: Lucas Vázquez is now a new Bayer Leverkusen player
The former Madridist signs with Leverkusen until 2027 after closing a ten-year chapter and winning 23 titles at Bernabéu
It's now official: Lucas Vázquez will play in the Bundesliga. The Galician footballer is joining Bayer Leverkusen after bringing his time at Real Madrid to an end. He signs a contract until 2027 and arrives on a free transfer after concluding his spell with the white club.
This will be the first experience outside Spain for the Coruña native. After ten seasons in Madrid's first team, Vázquez is starting a new chapter in Germany under Erik Ten Hag.
Farewell to Madrid, new life in Leverkusen
Lucas leaves behind a career full of success at Bernabéu. He has played 402 matches, accumulated more than 22,000 minutes, and contributed 38 goals and 60 assists. His trophy cabinet includes 23 titles: 5 Champions League, 4 Club World Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups, 4 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, and 4 Spanish Super Cups.
The winger, who also played on loan at Espanyol in 2014-15, said goodbye after his contract ended this summer. There was talk of Arabia, Türkiye, and even Deportivo de La Coruña. However, the call from the German champion outweighed any other option.
At his presentation, he wore the number 21 jersey and showed excitement: “I'm looking forward to starting at Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso and Carvajal had spoken very highly of the club. I want to fight for titles and keep winning”.

Top-level reinforcement for Ten Hag
Lucas's arrival addresses a clear need. Leverkusen lost Jeremie Frimpong, transferred to Liverpool for €40 million. The Galician will be his natural replacement, bringing experience and versatility.
Simon Rolfes, the club's sporting director, did not hide his satisfaction: “We're signing a player who has won everything with Real Madrid. His technique, vision, and tactical ability will be key. We're convinced he'll have a great influence on our team”.
Bayer are looking to keep the level that took them to win the Bundesliga last season. With Lucas Vázquez, they gain a footballer used to the pressure of the biggest stages.
New challenge in Germany
At 33 years old, Lucas faces a different challenge. He swaps Santiago Bernabéu for BayArena. From white to red and black. From playing alongside Mbappé, Vinícius, or Bellingham, to sharing a locker room with Aleix García, Grimaldo, or Schick.
Madrid lose a homegrown player who gave everything. Leverkusen gain a competitive footballer, hungry and with more than enough experience to make a difference.
