Radical change with Konaté: the deal falls through and he may renew
Guehi's move to Liverpool fell through, and the pressure on Konaté to renew his contract with the English club is increasing
Ibrahima Konaté's future at Liverpool is once again in doubt. The deal that seemed close to being finalized to strengthen the defense has fallen through in recent hours.
Everything was ready for Marc Guehi's arrival from Crystal Palace. The English center-back, 25 years old, had already passed his medical and agreed on personal terms. The transfer was valued at £35 million (41 million euros), including a 10% clause on a future sale.

Palace blocks Guehi's departure
However, Crystal Palace stopped the deal. They couldn't finalize the arrival of Igor Julio, its main target to replace Guehi. The Brazilian defender chose to sign for West Ham. Without his replacement, the London club decided to keep its captain.
Jaydee Canvot arrived from Toulouse, but Palace wanted to have two new signings before letting Guehi leave. Liverpool's frustration is evident, since they had practically agreed on everything.
Konaté, under pressure and in the spotlight
Konaté could benefit from this situation. With Guehi not moving to Anfield, the pressure on the Frenchman to sign a contract extension increases. The club needs defensive stability and now sees it as more likely that Konaté will extend his contract.

The French international's contract ends in 2026, just like Guehi. If he doesn't renew, he could leave for free next summer. But Liverpool trust they can keep Konaté thanks to this change in the market.
Meanwhile, Guehi will remain at Palace until June 2026. He has been a key piece for Oliver Glasner's team and captain in the FA Cup last season. This season he has played every minute and scored in the win over Aston Villa (0-3).
Liverpool will have to rethink its defensive strategy. Guehi's arrival seemed to strengthen the backline and give Konaté some rest. Without him, the board will have to negotiate with Konaté or look for alternatives in other markets.
This turn of events shows how moves in the market affect several players and their decisions. A failed signing can radically change a club's plans.
Now, the focus is on Konaté. His contract extension could be the solution to keep Liverpool's defensive stability. The failed deal with Guehi gives him some breathing room and opens a path that seemed closed.
