Return to Innsbruck: results of all matches between Tirol and Real Madrid

The next match for the Merengue side will be on August 12 against WSG Tirol, in what will be the team's short preseason. However, even though it is a rather unknown team, this is not the first time they have faced the White side. Although it is not the same name, they have faced each other three times in the same stadium in 1991, 1984, and 1971.

History has placed the Merengues three times in the Austrian stadium to face the teams that were the home sides at that time. A rather peculiar story that will now repeat itself this coming Tuesday at 7 p.m. and in which a White victory is desired.

The story behind this match

As we mentioned, the oldest meeting in this matchup comes from the Cup Winners' Cup in the 1970/71 season. There, the White side visited the stadium in the round of 16, where the Merengues, despite losing 1-0 at Bernabéu, won 2-0 in the return leg and came from behind.

The second occasion was against Butragueño's Real Madrid (1984), where they faced each other in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup. This was against SSW Innsbruck, which in those years was a merger between WSG Tirol and FC Wacker. That only lasted a few more years, since it was in that same year, 1984, when the club was dissolved.

The most recent meeting was in the 1990/91 season in the Champions League, in the round of 16 against Swarovski Tirol. The result was 9-1, with 4 goals from Hugo Sánchez and a hat-trick from Butragueño. Now they will meet again at Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck, where Madrid will show a different version from last year.
