Rui Costa, president of Benfica, sends a warning to Real Madrid about Álvaro Carreras

The Merengue squad still hasn't given up on its attempts to sign the Spanish full-back

One of the signings that Real Madrid wanted to make a reality before the Club World Cup was Álvaro Carreras. The executives led by Florentino Pérez were promoting a complete generational change in defense before Xabi Alonso's arrival, a goal that still hasn't been achieved.

Despite the approaches between the footballer's personal and professional circle and Real Madrid, negotiations that ended in the best possible way, there's still no agreement with Benfica. The Portuguese leaders are requesting payment of his release clause, an exit barrier set at €50 million.

From the Valdebebas offices, they show considerable hesitation regarding the payment of that amount: they consider it an excessive figure for a player with the profile shown by Álvaro Carreras. The intention to have the footballer before the Club World Cup also added more pressure to Benfica's financial demands, making an agreement between both clubs practically impossible.

Doubts about the continuity of Álvaro Carreras's signing at the top of the white club have led to the direct intervention of Benfica's president. Rui Costa has been very clear regarding the future of one of the stars of the squad led by Bruno Lage: "Let Real Madrid make an offer. So far, none has arrived".

His future is hanging in the air

In his words to MARCA, the head of the Portuguese squad has indicated that its board of directors could be open to negotiating the young Spanish talent's team change. However, this progress still hasn't happened according to Rui Costa himself... so there's not much room for maneuver in such talks.

"If there is one, we'll see what happens," says Benfica's president. The Club World Cup is definitely underway and Real Madrid is focused on the performance of Xabi Alonso's players. Most transfer matters have been relegated to the background, such as the signing of Álvaro Carreras.

The executives led by Florentino Pérez will wait for Benfica to be eliminated from the 2025 Club World Cup to resume the signing of this full-back. After all, the white club's sporting management considers that he is the best-positioned player to take on a position in which only Fran García is present as competition. At least while Ferland Mendy keeps working on his recovery.

In any case, the saga surrounding Álvaro Carreras takes on a new dimension with these words from Rui Costa. Benfica's president makes it clear that the Portuguese squad is willing to negotiate for Álvaro Carreras's future as long as Real Madrid makes an offer for the full-back. The "case" will continue beyond the end of the Club World Cup.
