Sergio Ramos Signs for Monterrey and Chooses Number 93: 'It's a Tribute...'
The former Madridist center-back announces his new team
One of the most surprising news in world soccer is the new team of Sergio Ramos. The Sevillian center-back ended his last stint with Sevilla a year and a half ago, a return to his soccer roots in search of extending his career in our country.
But since then he has been without a team. At 37 years old, not many clubs in the European soccer elite seem interested in incorporating the vast experience that Sergio Ramos himself has accumulated over the last two decades. This is why the latest rumors about his competitive future linked him with clubs in America, where his story seems to have a significant impact when considering his signing.

After discarding options like Boca Juniors and other South American teams due to the salary issue, Sergio Ramos has ended up signing with the team from Monterrey, Mexico. This signing, anticipated by several journalists for days, hasn't lost its spectacularity for a very striking reason: the number the Camas defender will wear.
In the press conference of his official presentation as a Monterrey player, Sergio Ramos revealed that he will wear '93' on his back, a number with a lot of history behind it. The former Madrid center-back himself acknowledged that it's "a tribute to Real Madrid," but also "to my career" which changed significantly after the goal in the Lisbon final.
Happy memories
Sergio Ramos remembers that "the 93rd minute was epic". That's why he decided to immortalize it once more on the field, choosing that number for his new stage as a footballer with Rayados. His departure from the European soccer elite, where there is more freedom for number assignments, has allowed him this gesture full of Madridism.
It's not the only gesture with which Sergio Ramos has tried to get closer to Real Madrid since he has been without a team. The shortage of personnel recorded by the first team in the defensive axis led many to consider the Camas center-back as a possible winter reinforcement. The white bosses dismissed that option on multiple occasions, making it clear that his time as a Madridist had ended in the summer of 2021.

Despite the insistence of all those rumors, reality ultimately prevailed: Sergio Ramos had no options to return to Santiago Bernabéu locker room. The only way the Camas center-back can be associated with the merengue entity again is by occupying a role similar to that of former players like Roberto Carlos.
Now that he has officially signed with Monterrey, he has a new soccer stage ahead of him where he will soon encounter Real Madrid. The Mexican club, as well as the white squad, is one of the teams selected by FIFA for the first edition of the 2025 Club World Cup to be held this summer in Miami.
