Surprising: Luka Modric's new jersey number at AC Milan after years with the '10'

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Luka Modric's number at AC Milan will be 14. A number that, after several years, ends Modric's time wearing the number 10 with which he made history at Real Madrid. According to what we know at Defensa Central, after choosing his number, Modric is ready for medical exams and to sign his new contract.

The match against PSG in the Club World Cup was Modric's last as a Real Madrid player. A farewell that, although it wasn't the best for a legend of his caliber, ended a glorious era. After 13 seasons as part of Real Madrid, Modric will sign with Milan until the summer of 2026, with an option for one more year.

With the clear goal of reaching the 2026 World Cup, Modric will join a club that guarantees him playing time in a very competitive league. Even though it'll be strange to see Modric without the 10, the number 14 also carries weight within the Italian side.

Starting over

Being 39 years old is an age that, for most players, would mean retirement from this sport.  However, for Luka Modric this isn't an obstacle to keep performing at the highest level. The Croatian midfielder showed, throughout last season, his ability to keep competing in European soccer.

Although he could've left for MLS or Arabia, Modric chose a team that, while not Real Madrid, is historic in this sport. Such is the history of the Italian side that the number 14 has been worn by players like Frank Rijkaard.

However, the most surprising wearer of this number is former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. The 90/91 and 91/92 seasons were the ones that saw the Italian wear a number that will now belong to Modric.
