The 2 Clubs That Requested Sanction Against Real Madrid Among the Most Favored by VAR
The letter from the white club has significantly shaken the landscape of Spanish football.
Real Madrid, after the disastrous refereeing they suffered during their visit to RCDE Stadium, has decided to show and express their frustration and anger with the refereeing community in our country. The letter published last Monday by the merengue entity, addressed to RFEF and CSD, has sparked a wave of reactions against it. Many understand that the entity presided over by Florentino Pérez aims to control the refereeing body, when that has never been the objective.
The reality is that Real Madrid, following the 'Negreira case', has emerged as the first and only club in Spain to propose the regeneration of the refereeing community. This disposition, far from pointing out those truly affected by this scandal in our soccer, has caused the attacks against the Madrid entity to increase over time.
The complaints have escalated to the point that several LaLiga clubs have decided to take action against Real Madrid's latest statements. Understanding that pressure is being exerted on the refereeing community with the statements sent from the Valdebebas offices, clubs like Sevilla and Atlético de Madrid are considering an unexpected measure. They want RFEF to file a complaint against this "pressure" exerted by the white club.
The information published by MARCA reveals that both teams are the ones who have raised their voices the most on this matter and led the protests against the latest official statement from the white entity. Meanwhile, the statistics of this season point to Sevilla and Atlético de Madrid for reasons of a different nature: the VAR interventions in favor and against.
Statistical anomaly?
The social media account X called '@futbolgate_ES' has published a compilation of the decisions made by the Spanish video refereeing so far in the 24/25 season. In that compilation, it can be seen that Atlético de Madrid has had 51 favorable VAR interventions and 42 unfavorable ones. Their VAR refereeing balance, then, is set at +9 interventions.
A similar case, but with more impact, is in Sevilla. The Sevillian team has 61 interventions in favor while they have only had 47 unfavorable interventions in the current soccer season. Their VAR refereeing balance is at a striking +14, making them the second most favored club by Spanish video refereeing.
Only Levante, with +18, is ahead of the Andalusian squad. By comparison with these teams, Real Madrid has experienced 41 favorable VAR interventions this campaign. Likewise, video refereeing has intervened a total of 68 times against them, leaving an impactful VAR refereeing balance of -27, the most negative in all of LaLiga.
Real Madrid is, by a wide margin, the team with the most unfavorable VAR interventions recorded this season: Valencia occupies the second place with 56 unfavorable interventions... and a VAR refereeing balance of -7. Their difference in the total balance is also striking: the -27 of Madrid surpasses by eleven points the second most disadvantaged team by VAR, Cádiz with a -16 that surprises.
