The Negative Record Real Madrid Wants to Avoid in Bergamo Hasn't Happened Since 2001

The worrying streak that Real Madrid seeks to break to avoid a situation like the one experienced in 2001

The Champions League is back and Real Madrid will be looking for a much-needed victory. Although the visit to Bergamo looks like a tough game, the team has the clear objective of winning in order to avoid two things. The first of them, tp drop lower than 24th place in the standings, and the second, avoid a record that hasn't been seen since 2001.

In the Champions League that season, Real Madrid accumulated three consecutive defeats away from home. The games against Anderlecht, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich left a mark that will not be repeated.

Their games against Lille and Liverpool ended in painful defeats where the Whites were unable to even score. This has put more pressure on the game against an Atalanta looking for revenge after their defeat in the European Super Cup.

The streak to avoid

Being the reigning Champions League champion, Real Madrid has shown that they are not in their best moment. Winning only 2 out of the first 5 games, the team is in an obvious crisis.

More than 20 years after that edition in 2001, Real Madrid have no plans to equal, or even surpass, this negative record. That's why the team is extremely focused on getting a victory that will help them get out of this problem.

Despite the results of their recent visits, the team is still far from its worst record in this competition. Having lost all of its away games between 1981 and 1987, Real Madrid are confident of avoiding this type of record. Even so, and given the competitiveness shown this season by Atalanta, the team knows that it must return to Madrid with a victory.

Only victory is enough

Being in a position far below what they are used to, Real Madrid know the consequences of not achieving victory. Even a draw wouldn't be enough for a club that remains firm in its intention to defend its Champions League title.
