Gonzalo, facing his former team tonight: this is how his time at Mallorca went

Gonzalo had an experience in Mallorca that has gone unnoticed by many

Real Madrid host Mallorca at Santiago Bernabéu in what will be the third matchday of La Liga. Los Merengues want to keep their streak going after having managed to defeat Osasuna and Oviedo. However, Los Bermellones don't want to make things easy for Xabi Alonso's side.

It will be a special match for Gonzalo, a Real Madrid youth academy product, but with a past at the Mallorca club. For many, he may be unknown, but the forward was part of the island team. However, it was almost merely testimonial since he didn't stay for long.

Everything goes back to 2018, when he was still a player in the Merengue youth academy, but he encountered a problem.  His family had to move to Mallorca for work reasons, although Gonzalo stayed behind. However, at 14 years old, they wanted to be together and managed to secure the forward's signing.

He had already left a very good impression at the White club, which accepted his departure. However, they wanted to add a clause to his contract, keeping a right of first refusal when he turned 16 years old. But it wasn't necessary since a year later he ended up returning to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid, the only option for Gonzalo

After a successful spell at Mallorca in Cadete B, Gonzalo's father faced a big decision. They wanted to send him to the United States for his development, although they left a door open. "The only way my son can become a professional footballer is by returning to Madrid" he said, according to Marca.

No sooner said than done, since he made his return to the White club and they decided he would live with his grandmother. This was the case until 2024, when his parents returned from Mallorca to Madrid. It was a wise decision, considering what Gonzalo has experienced in the last season.

He broke all the scoring records in Primera RFEF and managed to make the leap to the Merengue first team. There, he was the top scorer at the international level in the Club World Cup, despite the tough competition. He has earned a spot in the first team, to face his former club, Mallorca, tonight.
