Neither Carreras nor Mendy: Fabrizio Romano surprises with Real Madrid's full-back
The Italian journalist keeps Real Madrid's options open in this transfer market saga
Real Madrid has a series of pending signings for the upcoming summer transfer market. One of the most urgent signings was made official just 24 hours ago with the official announcement of Dean Huijsen's incorporation. But the executives led by Florentino Pérez wouldn't have stopped there, given the delicate situation of the current defensive line.
That's why they also initiated the search for a left-back capable of reaching the starting position from day one a few weeks ago. The option that has gained the most momentum in recent weeks is led by Álvaro Carreras, currently a Benfica player and a former youth player of the merengue club.

Not in vain, Carreras himself closely resembles the ideal signing that Xabi Alonso would have requested to solve the left-back issue in the first white team. But the information published by Fabrizio Romano indicates that this debate is far from offering a single candidate in the Valdebebas offices this summer.
Because the Italian reporter recalls that Álvaro Carreras is not the only option for the left-back listed among potential candidates. The names in that niche of the European elite soccer market are abundant, and some would have managed to convince the scouts led by Juni Calafat.
They haven't decided yet
The next step is to manage to 'sneak' into a debate that would currently be absolutely dominated by Álvaro Carreras. But there are options coming strongly from the Premier League and the Bundesliga, like Milos Kerkez and Álex Grimaldo. The first of these two players could join Real Madrid from the same club as Dean Huijsen: AFC Bournemouth.
For some time, there was speculation, in fact, about the possibility of Real Madrid going to the noble area of the Vitality Stadium with a joint offer for both footballers. That move was discarded, but the interest in acquiring the services of the young Hungarian left-back remains more than current according to Fabrizio Romano.

In this context, Xabi Alonso's arrival as the new coach of Real Madrid would have facilitated Álex Grimaldo's approach to Santiago Bernabéu locker room this summer. The former FC Barcelona youth player is one of the 'favorite' players of the Tolosa coach in the werkself squad, but the merengue bosses must first analyze his fit in the team. Especially in the long term, given that the footballer is close to 30 years old.
In any case, Fabrizio Romano insists that Real Madrid hasn't completely solved the left-back debate yet. While the club understands that a signing must be made to strengthen that position before the Club World Cup, there are still doubts about the protagonist of that much-desired transfer.
