Xabi Alonso has a new role in mind for Mendy: sale or position change
Ferland Mendy's future will be determined in the coming weeks by Xabi Alonso
One of the big unknowns Real Madrid faces for next season is Ferland Mendy. After the signing of Álvaro Carreras, the team's left-back position is overcrowded. According to what we know at Defensa Central, this has led Xabi Alonso to consider selling the French left-back or accepting that he will no longer be a starter for the team.
The latter is due to the high level Fran García showed throughout the Club World Cup. Despite doubts about his performance last season, Fran fit perfectly into Xabi's schemes. The Spanish left-back managed to earn part of the coach's trust during the World Cup and looking ahead to next season.
Of the two options Mendy has for his future, a sale is the most complicated. Since he is 30 years old and prone to injuries, his market value has been affected. Not many clubs would take the risk of signing the Frenchman.
Mendy's position
After 3 great seasons at Olympique de Lyon, Ferland Mendy arrived at Real Madrid in 2019. A signing that, for 6 seasons, has provided the left-back with remarkable solidity. The Frenchman has shined, above all, for his defensive qualities, being a real wall for his rivals.

However, his performance has always been hampered by his constant injuries. With a contract until 2028, Mendy's position at Real Madrid could change soon. While his skills are still appreciated, the Frenchman continues to leave many doubts.
His current market value is €14 million ($14 million) according to Transfermarkt. A value far below that of a player who has contributed a lot to Real Madrid in recent seasons. Unless a big offer is presented, Mendy's departure is an unknown.
What the future holds
With his role for next season clear, Mendy could look for an exit this summer. A move that, of course, would be the best for the Frenchman and for the team. However, at least for now, no team has inquired about the left-back.
