Controversy with the VAR Referee of the Copa Final, Iturralde González Confirms It
The former referee added more controversy to that referee appointment with his words on Cadena SER
After certain doubts about the referees chosen to officiate the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, in Seville, the CTA has issued its verdict. The heads of the Spanish referees have selected Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea as the field referee, appointing Pablo González Fuertes as the VAR referee for this very important match.
Iturralde González, once the saga around Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea or César Soto Grado as field referees was solved, has proceeded to assess that decision. According to this former referee, the referee set to act from the field is one of the best choices the CTA could have made for such a key match as this final.

"I think he's a referee who's in very good shape, who lets the game flow a lot", notes Iturralde González. However, he issues a warning to de Burgos Bengoetxea that could further improve his performance as a referee: he shouldn't comment so much on the plays with the involved footballers. "He likes to look good", notes the former referee, now a commentator and referee analyst on Cadena SER.
Having given his particular approval to Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea as the field referee for the Copa del Rey final, Iturralde González left doubts about Pablo González Fuertes. "They put him there because they thought that if there's a big mess, and he's a referee with seven or eight years left, they've burned him out", the analyst advances.
Inexplicable Decision for Many
In response to those words, Manu Carreño didn't hide his opinion either: "to avoid burning out a good one, let's put another one who, even if he's not good, if he gets burned out, it doesn't matter". While the host of 'El Larguero' expressed his concern about this way of making decisions in the CTA, Iturralde González tried to explain the situation to the veteran journalist.
"If you have 20 referees, 5 specific to VAR and two are from Madrid, only three could officiate", warns Iturralde. "If you put a referee who's leaving, why do you do it? Two international referees are going to the Club World Cup... and you don't put him in the best match of the year?", questions the former First Division referee.

Manu Carreño insisted: "that's very serious. They should put the best referee, it's like if a coach doesn't put his best player in case he gets burned out". The opinion of the host of 'El Larguero' about the choice of Pablo González Fuertes as VAR referee, as well as the explanation from Iturralde González, are truly illustrative comments.
"I was put in a final and a team vetoed me", recalls Iturralde himself, throwing a 'dart' at Real Madrid. That "team" that "vetoed" him was the merengue entity, showing their disagreement with the choice of the Basque referee for the 2010/11 Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona.
